Giant Pacific Red Octopus
The Giant Pacific Octopus is the latest addition to our collection.
“It was on my to do list for 10 years,” she smiles, completing this challenging but singular series. The sweeping tentacles of the piece appearing to flow in front of her.
“I had several inspirations for completing this octopus sculpture,” explains Danyluk in her studio, “Firstly, it was just how incredibly beautiful these giant octopuses are when they’re moving. I wanted to capture that motion.”
The sense of movement is seen throughout the entire piece. Each individual tentacle gives the illusion of mobility, as if the Octopus could continue on its underwater path at any moment. The muscles are defined and every sucker underneath the tentacles seem ready to squeeze into place.
“Secondly, it was the opportunity to explore metal finishes” Danyluk continues, “I’ll find a beautiful patina like the Candy Apple Red and work backwards…the Giant Pacific Octopus was the perfect canvas.” Bold and vibrant patina is a signature of Danyluk, but the stunning bright red of the Octopus is completely unique.
“Thirdly, the challenge it presented. I knew it would take a lot of commitment and a lot of patience, but I also knew I could do it.” Beyond the difficulties of keeping the incredible detail and action through every positive mold and negative model, the patina work itself is masterful.
